This unique image is a flambeau, they would carried to illuminate the parade at night. In this photo a flambeau carry's the Captain of the parade of the crew Orpheus, this parade was organized by world famous musician, singer and actor Harry Connick Jr, whom is a local New Orleanian. This year the captain of the Orpheus Parade was John Schroder. Orpheus is considered a super parade with super floats some almost a city block long. The parade comes from uptown and heads down St. Charles Avenue to downtown and to the New Orleans Convention where the entire Parade rolls inside and takes part in the public ball being held. The flambeau are fueled by gas tanks carried on the back of the flambeau carrier and or Kerosine fuel. The older flambeau carrier had a gallon tank atop and the fuel would flow downward to light the burners. These flambeau now proceed the floats or follow they do at times walk on the side but safe distance from the paper floats. Years past a flambeau carrier torch has ignited floats and the flames extinguished. The stainless steel sheet inscribed Captain, and the decorative image above is an Orpheus symbol for the parade Orpheus. Orpheus parades on Lundi Gras the night before Mardi Gars Day or Fat Tuesday.
