This faux grain porcelain door know was the front door of an 80 year old farm house in Brookhave, Mississippi. I helped my friend one summer and we restored his father's farm house. This photo was taken in the mid 80's and in the 90's his brother lit the fireplace and an amber caught the house on fire and it was totally destroyed. My friends farm house was located on 80 acres. The family grew their own vegetables for a family of 12. There were two front doors to the front of the house always exposed to the elements. The interior of the farm house door knobs were white. Many historic homes in New Orleans still use the 18th century of Faux Graining, When the technique is used on wood a feather is typically used to accent the actual wood grains of the wood. A few older homes as well here in New Orleans still have these Faux Grained door knobs. They are now reproduced but the antique door knobs are highly collectable. Also, in some of the more elaborate and historic plantation homes upriver from New Orleans, architects also included a detail on all the interiors doors of the plantation and that is hand painted porcelain key hole covers which would prevent drafts from entering the next room. Plantations relied on fire wood during the cold months to heat the massive homes.
