This photo recently discovered in my personal 100,000's archival photographs. Born in 1951 I grew up in Gentilly of New Orleans just around the corner was a cold war civil defense warning siren. In the 50's the sirens would broadcast a loud warning siren everyday around 12 noon.
I have seen just a few which still remains and were never destroyed over the years by the numerous hurricanes which have struck or removed to place high powered electric transformers in New Orleans. They are secured by a iron brackets and attached high atop electric power poles.
Most individuals these days are unaware what these metal roof cylinders are, in the event of a real emergency everyone is now alerted by civil defense broadcast over cell phones.

This is a wonderful photo! If I may ask, where is this siren located? I'm actually really interested in old sirens and have been working on mapping out all the old sirens in New Orleans, or at least the ones that are left. They had 85 of them! Can you believe that? I found two ones left at Franklin and Mendez. and the dead end of Prentiss Dr.
