This photograph the first of the entire day series. Carnes and heavy equipment in foreground, the work was to begin at 9 am and finish by 3 pm. Work started earlier about 8 am. The crane made numerous inspections then lowered for quite some time then presumed with the wrapping of the harness to place around the statue for its removal. At approximately 6:03 after a full day of securing, inspecting and unbolting the giant bolts which secured the statue to its base standing nearly 20 feet tall, and the total height of the statue near 81 feet towering above the City of New Orleans.
Having been at the sight the night before til 4 am when police blocked off one block from each direction of Lee Circle and St. Charles Avenue. I returned near 7 am and stayed til about 9 am taking photos from all angles of this historic event in New Orleans, Louisiana. I left to go to the nearby coffee shop and returned at 11 am and left around 2:15 pm to attend the Mayor of New Orleans public and national media event which was by invitation only. I returned after my presence and proceed back to the site and remained until the statue finally without notice was pulled away from the pedestal. I was leaning against a cement column by the National World War II which is in eyesight of the monument as well as The New Orleans Confederate Museum which is just across the street on Lee Circle.
When the announcement was made from the Mayor his plans to remove the statutes The Confederate Museum was asked if they would consider the statue of Lee have its final place and the curators replied the Museum was not the ideal place.
My self and everyone watch as the giant crane with the workers in the basket pulled away and we all waited and waited. I dozed off sitting with my camera in hand and a loud gasp and I immediately jump up thinking the statue had toppled off the pedestal and captured the statue just inches away from the pedestal.
