Artist's Description
This historic relic cast iron box was attached to the cast iron fence of the Historic St. Vincent Orphan Assylum was purchased by a buyer from Alabama. At some point within the past 15 year or less the box was removed either by thieves or the new owner of the building has it removed for preservation. The building is now the orphanage is now a thriving Bed and Breakfast and hotel in the Lower Historic Garden District in New Orleans, Louisiana.
This large, red-brick orphanage was built in 1864 with assistance from federal troops occupying the city. It helped relieve the overcrowded orphanages filled with youngsters of all races who lost their parents to epidemics. The orphanage is now a hotel, but a sign from orphanage days still hangs from the finely styled cast-iron gallery in front.
