This spectacular photo of the flare from the production platform I was on. This was taken during the peak of what was original a tropical storm later revised as a minimum hurricane. The Hurricane was named Cindy. I was on a platform and this was taken just outside the gallery I was a chef on. In most cases civilians are removed during any threat of tropical activity. It was only a minimum tropical storm but as conditions got worse we where not able to be rescued off the platform because of bad weather conditions so the entire crew remained onboard. The flare had to remain lit during the storm to relieve gas pressure below. At one point the flare was so intense and with the wind blowing the flame was across and away from the entire structure of the platform. As the seas progressed throughout the day, waves would crash against the structure and shake violently. No one was able to sleep during the peak of the minimum hurricane. Hello Michael, wow, thank you so much for V/F, I have heard of stories just how frigid it is in the North Sea, when I took this photo I was not a happy trooper but manage to stay together while the minimum hurricane passed us by. Hello Jose, this particular photo and day of events of what was only a tropical storm Cindy turned days later revised by the American Meterologist as a minimum hurricane was quite a memorable and expierence. We were just miles of the actual formation of the tropical storm and this was noted by weather instruments on the various platforms in the Gulf of Mexico. Because of safety for all who work in the Gulf of Mexico evacuation plans are made days in advance to remove everyone out of arms way of any activity approaching.
